Kintsugi

Kintsugi is a Japanese art form but also a great philosophy - though brokenness more beautiful and treasured things are possible.

The Kintsugi coffee table is made from a black concrete slab that has been purposefully shattered and meticulously repaired with resin and golden metallic powder. The legs are also made from black reinforced concrete.

'Kintsugi' - the inspiration and name for this table come from the Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery with resin and gold powder. The word Kintsugi means 'Golden Joinery'.

In 15th century Japan, the story is that a shogun, after breaking one of his most prized ceramic bowls, sent it to China to be repaired. When the bowl returned it had been mended but was held together by metal staples. The un-pleased shogun requested his own craftsmen devise a more elegant way to repair the bowl and so Kintsugi was born.

Kintsugi reflects the Zen ideas of Wabi-Sabi - an appreciation of the beauty in things that are worn, decayed, or asymmetric. Kintsugi doesn't attempt to disguise the damage that has been done but accepts it.
