Log

This amazing project was commissioned by Form At Large - a design company who specialise in experiential visitor attractions. The clients were National Trust Scotland and the table was designed to go into their brand-new visitor centre at Glencoe in the West Highlands.

Made from a huge log of Douglas fir, the table measures 6.5 meters long by 850 mm wide and was a huge undertaking for us. The log must have weighed close to a tonne at the time of working on it, as it was freshly cut and still wet - so there was no hand lifting this piece! We sourced the log at Charlston sawmill, about 5 miles away from our workshops, where they helped us cut the log to our required dimensions. The log then took a short drive back to us, where it was mechanically lifted into our shop. From there, we used chainsaws to cut channels in the base of the log to house the steel supporting legs and did a vast amount of planing, sanding and finishing to make sure the timber was looking and feeling great for all the visitors to the centre.

We had the steel legs fabricated by our neighbour Fab Auto who helped us create some incredibly sturdy legs, capable of holding up the enormous log. We used massive 12-mm steel plates on the bottom of the legs which screwed to the floor to keep it from toppling over. To finish the frame off, we had it powder-coated matte black, which adds style and some great protection to the metal.

On top of the table sits three panes of glass which have been printed with information about the natural features of the surrounding area of Glencoe.

We loved the challenge of making this table and would love to work on similar pieces for you! Please get in touch if you have a grand project of your own.
